Anorectal abscess is collection of pus around anus. It is considered that obstruction of anal glands by feces or tissue trauma leads to infection of glandular canals and development of abscess.

Anorectal abscess is collection of pus around anus. It is considered that obstruction of anal glands by feces or tissue trauma leads to infection of glandular canals and development of abscess. Constipation, prolonged travel, immune reduction  are the most frequent reasons.

Abscess may vary from a simple inflammation to life-threatening infection. Successful treatment depends on the early diagnosis and adequate surgical treatment.

 

What are the complaints in anal abscess?

The initial symptom of perianal abscess is acute pain in anal region. The pain increases gradually to become pulsating one, increasing at walking, sitting, straining, coughing. Painful tumefaction may be palpated. The general status aggravates. Body temperature is rising. Spontaneous puncture of abscess may lead to pus flow and contamination of clothes.

 

Diagnosis of anal abscess

External view and test by specialist is usually sufficient for the diagnosis. In rare cases, no external symptoms of lesion may exist, except complaints of high temperature and indisposition. Echography and puncture under echographic control is done in difficult cases. Pus is tested to find the bacterial agent.

 

What is the treatment of anal abscess?

Treatment is carried out by emergency at the surgical ward and consists of opening and cleaning of pus collected in the abscess sac. Modern broad spectrum antibiotics are applied.

Recovery is within a week.
