Its called also onychocryptosis. It is a frequent lesion, which appears when the skin on the side of toe nail starts growing over the nail or when the nail cuts into the skin.

Most often it affects the toe nail of the leg mainly in young people.
What is the reason for the lesion?
Among the lesion reasons are extremely big nails, hereditary predisposition, in people with a trend to bending of nail (i.e. in patients with arthritis).
The lesion is noticed also in mechanical pressure by ill-fitting shoes as well as at incorrect nail cutting. In case of trauma around the toe, a part of the nail may dig into the skin.
Fungal infections may also be the reason for ingrown nails.
What are the complaints?
Complaints are from heat, pain of the toe on the side of ingrown nail, sometimes at pressure may discharge pus. If the treatment is delayed, severe infection of the toe and feet may develop
What is the treatment?
No self-treatment is recommended, because it may lead of aggravation of complaints and development of severe infection. The most frequent recommendations are operative elimination of a part of the morbid nail by local anesthesia.
